Neuronal regeneration: CIBIO takes new approach

Researchers aim to counteract motor neuron degeneration by stimulating neuronal growth. The results of an international five-year study have recently appeared in “Molecular Cell”. The research team found out that the growth stimulation factor in mature motor neurons is blocked by another molecule, and when you try to set if free it displays enormous strength and excellent functioning

The power of mommy’s bacteria

A research study on the transmission of maternal microbiome provides the basis to better understand its impact on children’s health. The research - featured on the cover of “Cell Host and Microbe” - is coordinated by a team of Cibio researchers of the University of Trento with Santa Chiara Hospital in Trento

The many faces of breast cancer revealed

A research study managed to trace the origin of a particularly insidious type of breast cancer by identifying the mechanisms it uses to change continuously and to escape targeted therapies. The results have been published in Nature Communications. The research team is led by the researchers of the Centre for Integrative Biology – CIBIO of the University of Trento

The Art of Neanderthals

A study published today in Science Advances changes the way in which we see human prehistory and casts a new perspective on our ‘primitive’ ancestors: Neanderthals were capable of symbolic behaviour 115,000 years ago, well before meeting with Homo Sapiens. Diego Angelucci, geoarchaeologist from the University of Trento, who for ten years has been studying marine shells decorated by Neanderthals found in Spanish caves, expressed his satisfaction that “thanks to the radiometric dating technique, prehistory took a giant step forward today”

A precision Tool to remove Portions of DNA

Many had welcomed genome-editing as the most exciting discovery in 21st century biology for its impressive applications. Yet, since the beginning, the lack of accuracy of the DNA-editing enzyme made it impossible to use it effectively. CIBIO, the Centre for Integrative Biology of the University of Trento, has found a way to turn it into a precision tool that only targets a specific site of DNA that needs to be removed. In this way it will be possible to use genome-editing to correct sequences of genes, for example in patients with genetic disorders or cancer. The study, conducted in Trento, has been published in “Nature Biotechnology”

Planetary exploration: learning from bats

Bats’ double frequency band bio-sonar served as an inspiration for two researchers of the University of Trento. They established a new data processing technique to improve geophysical observation based on the interpretation of bi-dimensional subsurface images acquired by means of radars. Bio-inspired radars manage to obtain more accurate information regarding the composition and structure of planets and their moons. The first tests were carried out on the subsurface of Mars. The study, which is exclusively the work of a UniTrento team, was published today in Nature Communications

Solvay 1927 - Trento 2017: women and physics

90 years after the famous photo of the Solvay conference was taken, depicting 28 men scientists and one single woman, Marie Skłodowska Curie, the University of Trento and the Italian Physical Society present a different point of view: a new picture showing 28 women physicists and one man. Significant progress was made since Marie Skłodowska Curie’s times to improve the representation and the careers of women in physics. Yet, a lot more can be done starting by giving women more visibility. That was one of the topics of the conference of the Italian Physical Society in Trento

A trail of bread crumbs: that's how microRNAs help neurons find their way during the development of the nervous system

A research team led by CIBIO at the University of Trento has identified a fundamental biological mechanism in the creation of correct neuronal connections that, when altered, may cause neurodevelopmental disorders. The full study on Cell Reports

Repairing the spinal cord with graphene

Seven partners, including the Universities of Trento and Cambridge, joined forces in a European project. An interdisciplinary team of scientists is at work to develop a bio-electronic system capable of stimulating the regeneration of conductors of nerve impulses and activating the neural circuit. Four years of research and over 5 million funding from Horizon2020
